Casco Viejo (officially San Felipe) is Panama City's historic quarter, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The neighborhood was practically abandoned in the 1980s but has undergone an extraordinary transformation since the 2000s: today it's Panama's cultural epicenter, with chef-driven restaurants, rooftop bars, art galleries and the city's best nightlife. The hotel occupies an 1917 building designed by Leonardo Villanueva Meyer, Panama's most influential 20th-century architect, originally built as a branch of the National City Bank of New York — the bank that financed construction of the Panama Canal.
